How to Play & Mechanics

ArtZoom is a daily art trivia puzzle where players identify an artwork in six attempts. Each round begins at Zoom Level 1 with an extreme close-up of a painting. Every incorrect guess or skip zooms the canvas out one level to reveal more details.

You can play two puzzles per painting by switching between guessing the Artist name or the Painting Title. Use the smart autocomplete search to help with spelling, and utilize the Skip button strategically when you need more visual context before committing to a guess.

Why ArtZoom?

I started this project for a few reasons:

• Testing AI Coding Tools: I wanted to see the current state of AI coding tools in a real-world project. So far, I've mostly worked with tools like Google Antigravity and Gemini 3.5 Flash to write code and design systems.
• Practicing My Skills: Building this game is helping me learn more about game loops and development.
• Ad Monetization: I hope to establish a revenue stream once the site qualifies for ads.
• Entertainment: I wanted to create a fun, daily challenge. To me, ArtZoom is like Wordle but for paintings.

My Inspiration

I got the idea for ArtZoom after visiting the Art Institute of Chicago for the first time. I was suprised by how many artworks I recognized during my visit, and it seemed like a fun basis for a challenge.

Around the same time, I learned about the sound-guessing game dialed.gg. Learning that the game was mostly vibe coded inspired me to try and replicate its success with a similar game built around visual art.

Technical & Play Details

The game runs on the registered domain art-zoom.com. The entire puzzle database is stored locally, with images served directly from Wikimedia Commons.

Player progress, streaks, and statistics are saved in the browser's local storage, and can optionally be backed up and synced to the cloud via sync codes. If you join a Café, your profile nickname, avatar settings, and daily scores are synced to our secure server to populate group leaderboards.

Licensing & Sourcing Compliance

All artworks featured in ArtZoom are in the public domain. The digital reproductions of these artworks are sourced from Wikimedia Commons.

We respect copyright and Creative Commons terms. In compliance with open-source licensing guidelines, every puzzle's end screen includes a direct link to its source file description page on Wikimedia Commons. This allows players to verify the original uploader/photographer, metadata, and specific licensing terms (such as CC BY-SA 4.0, CC0, or public domain designations).
